Around the time multiplayer was released, the leaderboard was created. Back in 2009, the iPhone and iPod screens were only 320x480 pixels. It is now 2013 and iPhones and iPods have screens that are 640x960 pixels (and larger in the case of the iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, and iPhone 5c). Our avatars are allowed to be 80x80 pixels max. An image 80x80 is much larger in proportion to the rest of the screen when the screen is 320x480 but much smaller is the screen is 640x960. For that reason, on 640x960, the leaderboard avatars have been stretched to and displayed as 160x160 images. Thus, losing quality.
I think we should be allowed to use avatars that are 160x160. On 320x480 screens, the leaderboard will just shrink the images by 50% (so the leaderboard will look the same for those devices).
