He's talking in terms of creating an equation from a pattern. He said something like -1,0,2 ect

well, if you have the list -1, 0, 2, the equation would be:

2^(n-1) - 2

plug in 1, 2, 3 in the equation

2^(1-1) - 2 = 1 - 2 = -1
2^(2-1) - 2 = 2 - 2 = 0
2^(3-1) - 2 = 4 - 2 = 2

basically you're just finding an equation in which you can plug in the index for variable n (for example, -1 was the first value, so -1 is 1, 0 was the second value, so 0 is 2) and the result would come out to be the answers.

In this equation I modeled, if you plug in 1 for n, you get -1 (this is true since the first number is -1) if you plug in 2 for n, you get 0 (this is true since 0 is the second number) and if you plug in 3 for n, you get 2 (this is also true since 2 is the third number)

hope that helped
