I think that instead of text chat in a live game there should be voice chat... Private voice chat to teamates or specific players if you want. Also a feature to mute a chat if you want to.

This feature would have to be only availible to registered players because as delta said, anons would be annoying. You would also have to have the feature of blocking people out of your chat in case a registered player was being annoying. I would love for this to happen though. :D

This was brought up while the game was still in beta. You wouldn't even have to buy a "badass" mic, they give you one when you buy a smart phone. I got one with my iPhone and another one with my BlackBerry Bold.

For now everybody who has a computer could use Skype, http://www.skype.com a free internet calling program. This would be good because it wouldn't cause lag on the server, but only people with a computer would be able to use it. At least some of us would be able not talk to each other though.

Not to shoot you down but, I feel a teamspeak or ventrillo with a possible addition of MRC would be wayy more beneficial than skype. I use skype and it's more of a buddy list, what we're looking for is a melting pot of users, like a town square if you will.

Are those programs free? I noticed you said an additon of MRC, so that suspects it costs money. I mean either way this will cost some money for some people, to buy the microphone or headset, but I'd like to make it as convinient as possible. Btw what is "MRC"?

MRC Gives out a one month free trial which you can delete and redownload, and if they have an iPhone, the mic/headset comes with their phone. As well as every other smart phone sold today. MRC is really not that useful for this situation so don't even regard it.

Wow, Sousa like we're about 10 years too fast, my iPod dosent have a mic, if it did the game would lag alot because of the excess data being transmitted, if u ask me the next step would be selective chatting... As in from oneplayer to another so all the people in the game wouldn't be in on the conversation.

Yeah I know this is a good idea but like Lawrence said it's fine for now. I can practically type faster then a person talking normally.

Post Posted: Mon Mar 22, 2010 11:01 am  Post subject: Teamspeak

You're right Brian, Ventrilo or teamspeak would be better for this situation, although I think that one of those would be good for the main and registered room, while skype would be better for in-game chat. There would be only 2-4 people in a in-game chat, and for 2v2 you could have a private chat with your teammate on Skype. Teamspeak looks a little better to me for the main, because it looks more user-friendly and less complicated, but you seem to know more about this than me Brian, so what do you think?

To galm:
Thanks for letting me know that there are people that don't want voice chat. I understand and respect that for whatever reason it may be, but Brian and I are trying to get this set up. We are trying to move this past the "Oh that would be cool" stage, on onto the "Hey look now we have voice chat" stage. Since Apple only allows in-app voice chat through wifi, and not 3G, and it would take up bandwidth, the voice chat would have to be through a computer program. I personally think that voice chat would be great, but if you disagree than you wouldn't have to do it, nobody's forcing you to if/when it gets set up. You are also a faster typer than most people on this game galm, so that could be apart of the reason. I personally think that typing on any touch-screen is hard, as of there are many mistakes made, and would prefer talking.

Well most of the people, I feel, that play this game, play on wifi already, because it's more reliable. I feel that we can have voice chat enabled, and when those playing on wifi have a headset plugged into their device, they will be able to use it to speak. I think that we could have a small icon pop up on the right hand side of the chat menu (the one that's mainly unused except for people writing longer responses) to notify all players who is talking, or possibly, who is spamming. Muting someone would be easy, if you click on the right hand side where the mic icon pops up, it'll bring up a menu of players that have a headset plugged in, clicking on their name will mute their mic, and clicking on it again will unmute them. I think that in-game chat is EXTREMELY useful and a viable source of strategies. Those who play with 3G won't have a chat function, but when they get in wifi, it will be opened up.
One of the problems I see with in-game voice chat is potentially more lag due to the chat eating up bandwidth, but as long as nobody is spamming during the game, it won't make a difference.
And, of course, anon's will NOT be able to use the voice chat command no matter what.

The button to show who has a headset should be within the chat, to the left of the player options at the top right, maybe called "Voice Chat" or Voice Options". I assume that all player that have a mic would automatically be joined in your conversation, and you would mute them manuallly if needed. That is, if Scott would create the in-game voice chat. This would definetaly suck up bandwidth, and cause lag. We will certainly have to see what Scott says about this first. I do have to agree with you once again Brian, that most people have wifi, and/or it is availible. Is the iPhone capable of wifi or not? If it is it would be better to get people on voice chat. Either way we would have to get Scott to approve of this first.

Okay, so it took me a few hours on paint and a terrible laptop trackpad, but I think it looks pretty darn good. This is MY idea of what voice chat would look like.

Well, the normal chat would still be there, think of it as Blackberry Messenger for Blackberry's, its just more exclusive. Like, the cool crowd and the veteran players would usually have the mics.

Wow Brian, just wow. That is just unbeleivable and kind of how I thought of it too, only better. The "Voice Chat " button looks like it was there all along, and it belongs there. Well now Scott knows what to model for, now we just have to see if he'll do it, how much lag it would cause, and how hard it would be for him to do it. I hope it works out this way, and not on the computer.

To galm: The iPod Touch has a 3.5mm jack, which is the regular size for a computer jack. However, headsets that go into computers either have two jacks(one for mic, one for speakers) or is a USB plug. There is also headsets ment for mobile phones that have 1 jack, but it is 2.5mm. What I am getting at is that there are adapters that put 2.5mm to 3.5mm and the Y adapter would for the computer headset with a mic to one 3.5mm plug does not exist. I am sure that there is a USB female to 3.5mm jack adapter, but I can't find one and since they are two completely different plug formats i'm not sure if I would trust it to work. The 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter for mobile phone headsets is only 1 cent, although it would have shipping extra, but it will have to be done for voice chat with an iPod Touch. Going from a mobile phone to an iPod gives you a little more variety of headset to choose from. I currently run on an iPod Touch 2G (16GB) so I will have to do this, as well as other people.

After much research I have found out that the only adapter that would work for a headset with a mic is the 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter (Lol only 1 cent). All others would not work for it, and they were for they were for a different use. The best headset for this use would be the Apple headset that comes with a microphone.

I'm almost certain that any phone headset, like the one that comes with the iPhone, would work with an iPod.

No not all of them would work because the phone headset have a 2.5mm jack, where as the iPod Touch has a 3.5mm jack, so you would need that adapter. I don't have an iPhone so I didn't know about the headset that comes with it. I still have yet to find a headset that is capable with a 3.5mm adapter with one cord (besides the iPhone one). I have not really been looking at the more expensive headsets, but you could probably do some weird bluetooth headset or earpiece with a 3.5mm jack, or something that doesn't require a jack, but it would be expensive.

Ok will this is starting to get a little off-topic, but im really looking for a headset that goes over your head and has earpads, rather than one with just earbuds, that go directly into your ears. I think that the ones that go over your head would be more comfortable than the earbuds after long periods of time. But hey, different strokes for different folks. Lets get back to the MAIN topic now: Seeing if this is possible, and if it will be done.

Alright there's two more things that I forgot to put in other posts and I just thought of. The mute should have an unmute option, and an unmute list. The unmute would be good in-game and especially in 2v2 because you would be able to talk to ur partener, then back to your opponent. The other thing was that when you mute somebody, you wouldn't be able to hear them, and they wouldn't be able to hear you. There should be a gray line on everybody's screen, or at least on your screen saying that somebody has muted you. Maybe on the menu on the right you could see who has muted you as well.

Until we can get in-app voice chat we should use Skype. Join me! My username is "WI-Nate". You have to have a username of 6+ characters and there aren't many options to do, so I had to do something. That's why I have to WI before it, which stands for Warfare Incorportated incase anyone was wondering. Search me up once you get it.

That sounds like a great idea Brian! I though of another one too, which deals with knowing who has muted you. Maybe when you press the "Players" button and you have a headset/mic plugged in, it would tell you who has muted you.

Ex: BrianBSHS, Demon Lord, and kilik8880 are also in the room. BrianBSHS and kilik8880 are currently muting you.
Or when nobody is muting you: BrianBSHS is also in the room. Nobody is currently muting you.

Those are just some ideas to save room on the voice chat menu on the right. When somebody has muted you it would show up on your screen only (Or should it be on everybody's screen who has a headset/mic in?) in gray letters.

Ex: BrianBSHS has just muted you
Or if it was on everybody's screen: BrianBSHS has just muted N@te.

This is a private message that I sent to Scott yesterday. It basically explains everything.

As you know, Brian and I are trying to get voice chat set up. There are many different options that can be done:

1. In-App voice chat. This is probably favored by most, and would not require users to have an availible computer. Headsets with mics are scarse for this, but can still be easily found, and are even more availvible with an adapter. The problem with this, is that it may, and probably will, cause lag. Is there a way around this? Will that cost money and/or a lot of time? This would be really cool to have.

2. Skype. This is probably the best option, but like Brian said, it is not really meant especially for this use. It is meant mostly for friend-to-friend talk, and with only a few people. It is a great temporary solution though, and could be done if the other two options aren't acceptable. I'm not very expericened with Skype, so I do not know how many people can talk on the same call at once, but I don't think it's really set up for a lot of talk at once. You can also do voice chat with Yahoo, but Skype is more set up for it.

3. Teamspeak. I looked at Ventrillo and TeamSpeak and TeamSpeak looks like the better option. It is more user-friendly. The only problem, (and it is kind of big) with any computer speaking program other than Skype, is that it costs money. This is fairly cheap, but is stil money costing. However, it is set up exactly for what we would be using the voice chat for: many people talking at once (At seperate times, of course).

It could be both, thats not a big issue, and if you are muted by someone, or if someone has muted you, a red X appears next to their name. Ill render an image, give me a few minutes.

I rest my point. Skype is a good temporary solution, and in-app voice chat will cause lag. Now, how much lag, I'm not completely sure. I am still awating Scott's replay from my pm, as it is still in my outbox. It seems as though he's just avoiding this altogether. I think he's mainly working on the cheating problem. And Brian, I am not against you on the in-app voice chat. I think it would be great, I just don't think it's going to come any time soon, if it does at all. Good pics bw.

Thanks :D. The amount of lag is going to be caused by someone spamming the mic, the more they talk, and the more people who are talking at once results directly to the amount of lag experienced. That's why, if/when the option becomes available, the mute function is imperative to smooth running.
