I LOVE this game!!
I am having two issues. First, my Harvester always goes into trouble instead of having some sort of self preservation.
The other, I will set up a group of somethings and set them around as defense, and when I check on them...they are just sitting there getting killed, not even attacking. Sometimes they attack back, but not always.
Is it just me, it get quite aggravating, makes me want to quit the game.

Don't give up. The harvesters known as "Bullpups" are quite stupid. They have lots of amour and can find Galaxite by themselves BUT you have to protect them.
As to your other problem of defenders not defending. Depends on what type of vehicle or troops you have defending. Dominions and Corporate Raiders do not defend themselves. Everything else defends themselves if they are close enough to shoot back.

If the vehicles are moving at the time they are being attacked, they do not stop and shoot back, they keep moving under fire.
