It is possible.
Funny thing though considering that I chose "320x320,gray low-res art" in the display option screen. I didn't even enable the Sony hires support for the game. Another thing, I can even view a much larger area of the map. Everything sort of scaled down but still hires.

Anyway 160x160,gray low-res art on my sj20 is unplayable at all.
