Free radical refers to a molecule with an available orbital, that's extremely reactive to other elements.
(Found that out in my favorite class -- science)
SO basically, these Free Radicals are missing orbitals and are extremely reactive. I think it may mean they're missing galaxite and their reactions are... extreme.
My three cents...

Free Radical probably has a more direct meaning... free, as in no monopolies or government, and radical means they are strongly for this freedom and will fight for it. I think this makes a little more sense.

I still think they're tiny little pieces of matter.

....not exactly.
A free radical is a molecule produced by the mitochondria in a cell. It travels through the cell randomly bonding to things in there, causing the mitochondria to produce more free radicals. Studies show that this is a cause of aging, because the older one gets the more likely a free radical is produced by the mitochondria.
