Post Posted: Tue Jun 22, 2004 11:18 pm  Post subject: INSTALLATION questions

i've tried searching all the posts, but still can't find the answers i need.

1) how much free internal memory is required to run the game (NOT the memory for the files on expansion card or main memory)? I have 3.2MB on my Zire71, but still not letting me play the game

2) which version should i install... "Warfare Incorporated.prc" or "Warfare IncorporatedA.prc"? Is the latter for PalmOS5?

3) I tried using older versions of WI, but they say they don't support OS5. Any suggestions (other than buying a new PDA)?

thanks

Uh, I've been using Palm apps for quite a while now, i know about readme files. This is the only README.txt that it came with. Maybe i got an incomplete version, i'll have to check wehn i get back from work.

Hey good questiuon,

I have a Zire 72, so we would use the same program so on my palm once you install all that is needed it takes up 2656K so it would be around that amount.

Good tip is highlight all the items you are going to install on your palm and look under propertirs (this is on ur computer) and it should say the size of all the files selcted added up!

That last part is the answer to your question 2. Warfare IncorporatedA.prc is for Palm OS5 and above.

Also, there's this from the "Devices" section of WarfareIncorporated.com:
Quote:
Warfare Incorporated for Palm OS is compatible and optimized for all Palm, Sony Clie and Handspring devices with Palm OS 3.5 and newer and 2MB of free memory.

So, with 3.2 mb available on your Zire (btw - how do you like the Zire 71?) you should be able to run it. Are you sure you have Warfare IncorporatedA.prc installed. I know - that's probably a dumb question, but it never hurts to ask... :)

Just for the sake of throroughness (I'm sure you've already installed them) the other files to put on your handheld are:

Quote:

- htdata824.pdb - game data for 320x320 & 320x480 color screens
- htsfx.pdb - game data for sound effects

Hope that helps!

Thanks to everyone helping out on this question!

For the Zire71, add up the size of these install files:

Warfare Incorporated.prc (OS 5 version)
htdata824.pdb
htsfx.pdb

These need to be in main memory when the game runs (they can be in storage memory, but the launcher really copies them into main memory before the game runs).

Warfare Incorporated.prc is compressed and gets decompressed when the game is run. The result takes about 400K of storage memory.

Then for run time execution the game needs at least 512K (for hi-res) and uses more if you have it (temporarily during execution only). This is a mix of dynamic heap memory and storage memory (it first uses what is left of dynamic heap and if needs more then it uses storage memory... some devices can accomodate this 512K in dynamic heap with no problem). The TT has a 512K heap, I haven't measured the Zire71.

UPDATE. It's working now. All i did was soft reset it.

ditto on the WI.prc and WIA.prc files

I'm actually using the former..... I checked using an SD card reader. I also installed it using an v1.2 installer rather than the v1.0 zip file of the game. Oh well, whatever works.

As well for the free RAM. I was guessing 2MB minimum was enough to just play the game. Strangely enough though, I still have 3.4MB of RAM left just like yesterday, but I don't get that "not enough memory to run ARM optimized....." message anymore.
I am however getting a startup message saying that i should free more RAM to improve performance. Will it ALWAYS say that as a reminder, or will it actually stop once it detects that you have plenty for full optimized play (how much RAM for this if there is a figure). Also, having a 144MHz OMAP processor for my Zire 71, have any of you with similar specs noticed any needs to make compromises to get the best performance possible? Reason being if there's only a slight game performance improvement or not at all, I'd rather avoid the hassle of deciding what else to hock on my main mem.

thanks again for your response

Missed this some when I first read it.
Anyways, I'm liking it ALOT.

I especially like:
-hi res screen, hi color screen
-polyphonic speaker
-great compatibility with lots of games and apps

what i don't like:
-only 13.8MB of user RAM. After i install all the other extras (PDF reader, Kinoma, RealPlayer, Documents to Go <which i got as a gift, NOT bundled with the Z71>), I'm down to 11.2MB. Far cry from the 16MB. If i had a 32MB device, I'd DEFINATELY be making good use of that extra 15MB or so. There are other games I want to install, but those have large .pdb files that need to be on internal mem, which i can't do since that'll mean not enough post installation mem for WI to run :x
-"loose" 5way nav. It's not as tactile in moving up/down/left/right. U have to press slightly further to get movement in that direction
-Diaganol movement on 5-way is difficult to do with it. Luckily, very few of my games require diagonal movement
-PIM buttons also aren't as tactile as they could be, I tried demos at stores where this isn't so. Furthermore, some ppl online say they're PIM buttons have lost tactility, so i don't know what to make of this.
