I'm planning to upgrade to w-fi enabled device and I would like to know if it is possible to play between two wi-fi devices peer-to-peer, i.e. without any local wireless network infrastructure.

You may use peer-to-peer mode and play between two wireless devices. We use two Palm Tungsten Cs to play. You have to set up your device to have an IP# in peer-to-peer mode.
These instructions work on my T|C.
Go into Prefs / Wi-Fi / Info / Edit Network / Details /
Tap below Connect to: and a choice of Peer-to-Peer (ad-hoc) comes up.
Tap OK. Device will then obtain an IP# for itself and you are on. The network will stay on for 3 min. (default) unless you are playing a game. You can change this to 15 min. The joining players should search for your signal and then join.
You should change the SSID name to something like "Palm peer-to-peer" so you can tell it apart from your home network.
Good luck,

Well, nice to hear that I could play virtually anywhere, provided I just get there two wi-fi enabled devices
One more question: how high is the maxmal range of this kind wi-fi p2p connection? Have you conducted any "experiments" in this matter?

We played a game about 20 ft. apart for about 30 min. Used 25% of a T|C battery.
